KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 4): The ceiling price set for the Covid-19 vaccine offered to Malaysia under the Covid-19 Global Vaccine Access (COVAX) facility is US$21 (RM87.50) each, said Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

Putrajaya is in the final stages of negotiations to participate in COVAX, he said in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Khairy said the discussions are being carried out by his ministry with the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Finance and the Attorney General’s Chambers.

He said certain clauses in the COVAX agreement needed fine-tuning.

Khairy said the vaccine is expected to be available in Malaysia during the first quarter of 2021.

However, it will only be available to 3% of the population, he said, adding that the government intends to give priority to frontliners and the most vulnerable people.

The minister also said the government has increased its allocation from RM1 billion to RM3 billion for immunisation for 70% of the population.

Khairy was responding to a question from former health minister Datuk Seri Dzulkefly Ahmad (PH-Kuala Selangor), who asked if the number of vaccines in the country is going to be increased and for details on Malaysia’s participation in COVAX.
