Malaysia reports 1,096 new Covid-19 cases; Selangor cases spike to fresh high of 603

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 22): Malaysia logged 1,096 new Covid-19 cases today with a spike in Selangor, making it the second consecutive day of four-digit cases, according to the Ministry of Health.

Selangor overtook Sabah today as the single state with the highest number of new Covid-19 cases, with 603 — the highest daily figure for the most populous state since the pandemic hit the country in January.

The previous record high was 407 cases recorded last Thursday (Nov 19).

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said 536 cases in the state were from existing Covid-19 clusters, while 39 cases were detected from other Covid-19 screening.

Meanwhile, 27 cases came from the screening of close contacts of Covid-19 patients, while one was an imported case.

The spike in Selangor's Covid-19 cases was due to the Teratai cluster, with 504 infections, representing 83.3% of today's daily cases, he noted in a statement today.

The Klang Valley, comprising Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, has a total of 634 cases. Kuala Lumpur reported 30 cases while Putrajaya has one case.

Noor Hisham said Sabah was second with 311, of which 139 cases were detected from screening of close contacts of Covid-19 positive patients.

Of the 1,096 cases nationwide, only six were imported, he said.

As for the latest fatalities, the ministry reported three more deaths related to Covid-19, which pushed Malaysia's death toll up to 335 to date.

All the deaths were again restricted to Sabah. The deceased were aged between 68 and 90 years old with all of them having health problems such as high blood pressure, stroke, dyslipidemia and cardiac arrhythmia.

Active cases which carry high transmission risks stood at 12,843, with 106 patients currently being treated in intensive care units, with 46 needing ventilators.

Meanwhile, Malaysia's total cases soared to 54,775, exceeding 41,597 total recoveries so far.
