GEORGE TOWN (Dec 1): A fire that started at the back lanes of shophouses along Jalan Dato Keramat here caused traffic to come to a “standstill”, FMT News reported.

According to the news portal, the fire broke out at about noon and “razed a 1,600 sq ft wooden shophouse” while damaging “five other adjacent units”.  The two occupants of the shophouse escaped injured.

Thick smoke can be seen billowing from the scene with Komtar on the background.

Two fire engines from the Beach Street and Perak Road stations were deployed to fight the blaze.

"The fire is under control and no victims were reported," Penang Fire and Rescue Department (fire operation and safety) officer Nafis Ariff Abdullah told the media.
