Seremban barista creating buzz with his coffee car

SEREMBAN (Dec 8): Retired military fitness instructor, Cpl Mohd Ariff Sharudin, 47, (pictured) has turned his coffee love into a new career.

Five years ago he started the 'Ariff Coffee First' mobile café which operates out of a converted Kia Sportage parked near Pasar Ampangan here.

The coffee car contains a brewing machine, coffee grinder, sink, electric generator and a table-and-stool set which he puts out for customers to enjoy their drink while watching the world go by.

Mohd Ariff said he started the business because he wanted to share his love for coffee and that the idea was sparked after a holiday in New Zealand.

“I’m a true coffee lover. When my wife and I were in New Zealand in 2004, I saw the difference in how they did things with their mobile coffee business.

“So I decided to try and apply this idea here with my coffee car,” the Perakian who served at Kem Rasah in Seremban till he retired in 2017, told Bernama.

Mohd Ariff said he began learning how to make coffee after buying a coffee maker.

“Frankly, I didn’t know about the coffee process in the beginning, but I learnt by watching YouTube,” he said.

After he became proficient, he spent RM50,000 on turning his sport utility vehicle (SUV) into a café on wheels.

Mohd Ariff said he uses up to 20kg of Gayo coffee beans from Acheh, Indonesia per month and that it is easier to brew and more fragrant compared to other coffees.

Admittedly there are a lot of choices out there for coffee lovers, but Mohd Ariff said he has his own fans from all ages and corners of Seremban, with his offerings selling well every day.

“I sell cappuccino, espresso, latte and mocha, but the current craze is mocha and latte,” said the the father-of-one.

The car barista said he is able to make a profit of over RM200 per day selling up to 50 cups of coffee at RM5 – RM12 each

The Ariff Coffee First mobile café opens for business from Monday – Friday, 7am -12.30pm and on weekends and public holidays till 2pm.
