KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 14): Malaysia today saw 1,371 new Covid-19 cases today, with Selangor contributing 532, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 84,846. Four more deaths were also reported.

It also saw 1,204 more patients recovering from the illness, which raised total recoveries from the pandemic in the country to 70,597 of the overall infected tally, according to Ministry of Health (MoH) director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a virtual press conference today.

However, total active cases — which carry high transmission risks — rose to 13,830, as recoveries came in fewer than new infections.

Dr Noor Hisham said that of the 1,371 new cases today, only one was imported while the rest were local transmissions.

Speaking at a virtual press conference, he confirmed that a security guard with Top Glove Corp Bhd died yesterday after contracting Covid-19.

"Once he was admitted to the hospital, it was already at a late stage," Dr Noor Hisham said, noting that the 29-year-old man from Nepal died because of lung complications.

Selangor accounted for 532 or 38.8% of today's infections, followed by Sabah with 283 cases, Negeri Sembilan (260), Kuala Lumpur (124), Perak (62), Johor (45) and Penang (31).

Only three states were without any new cases today — Sarawak, Pahang and Perlis.

Sabah continued to top the list of states with the highest cumulative infections, with 33,111 cases in total, followed by Selangor (21,579), Kuala Lumpur (8,201), Negeri Sembilan (6,524), and Kedah (2,827).

Dr Noor Hisham said 72 of today's cases were related to prison clusters, namely the Tembok cluster (48 cases), Jalan Harapan Prison cluster (22 cases), Matambai cluster (one case), and Kepayan Prison cluster (one case).

Of the latest deaths, two were in Sabah and one each in Labuan and Perak.

A 54-year-old man, the sole foreigner among the deceased today, died at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu,  said Dr Noor Hisham.

The three Malaysians who died were women, comprising a 40-year-old with diabetes at Hospital Labuan, a 50-year-old with diabetes, high blood pressure and dislipidemia at the Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun in Ipoh, and a 46-year-old with high blood pressure, dislipidemia and obesity at Hospital Tawau.
