KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 18): Malaysia’s new Covid-19 cases climbed to 1,683 from 1,220 reported yesterday, with Selangor and Kuala Lumpur contributing 889 cases or 53% of today’s new cases.

This pushed Malaysia’s confirmed Covid-19 cases to-date to 90,816, about nine times more than the 10,219 recorded on Sept 20. Among new infections, eight were imported, according to health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Meanwhile, 1,214 Covid-19 patients have recovered from the disease, bringing total recoveries so far to 75,244 or 83% of total cases.

As new infections surpassed new recoveries, active cases, meaning those that carry high transmission risks, pushed past 15,000 to 15,140 cases — the highest seen since the coronavirus was first reported in the country in January.

No new deaths were reported — the first lull in 13 days — which meant the death toll remained at 432.

As for state/territory breakdown, Selangor was the highest contributor of the day, with 692 cases, followed by Sabah with 260 cases and Kuala Lumpur with 197 cases, Noor Hisham said in a statement.

He also noted that 313 of the overall new cases came from Covid-19 related prisons and temporary detention centres across the country comprising the Jalan Harapan prison cluster in Selangor with 235 cases, the Tembok cluster in Kedah with 55 cases, the Tembok Gajah cluster in Johor (12 cases), the Bakti cluster in Negeri Sembilan (eight cases), the Kepayan prison cluster in Sabah (two), and the Seberang Perai Prison cluster in Penang (one).

Earlier today, Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced that the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Sabah will be extended to Dec 31, as Covid-19 cases in these places remained high. The CMCO was supposed to end on Sunday (Dec 20).

For Selangor, the order applies to all districts except for Sabak Bernam, Hulu Selangor and Kuala Selangor.
