KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 22): A total of 1,880 Covid-19 cases have been recorded among healthcare workers since the pandemic began in January, said the Ministry of Health (MoH).

"Up until Dec 21, 1,880 Covid-19 cases have been detected among healthcare workers from various screenings," said MoH director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement.

Dr Noor Hisham said 33% of the infections came from transmission among colleagues, while another 33% were from the community.

He added that as of Dec 15, 52,593 healthcare workers had been screened.

Last Friday alone, 1,359 healthcare workers tested positive for Covid-19, bringing total infections since the third wave of the outbreak began in September to 1,771.

Dr Noor Hisham noted that there were five groups of healthcare workers with the highest number of Covid-19 infections, namely nurses, medical officers, healthcare assistants, assistant medical officers and graduate medical officers.

Overall, Malaysia today recorded 2,062 new Covid-19 cases, pushing the nationwide tally to 97,389.
