KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 31): Malaysia reported a new record high of 2,525 Covid-19 cases today, about half or 1,205 from Selangor, according to Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement today. And eight more deaths were recorded.

The latest daily addition is 190 cases more than the country’s previous record high of 2,335 cases, which was recorded on Saturday (Dec 26).

With the new infections, Malaysia's confirmed Covid-19 cases pushed past the 113,000 mark to 113,010, with death toll rising to 471.

Recoveries, meanwhile, came in at 1,481, bringing total recoveries to 88,941 or 78.7% of overall cases.

As the daily recoveries came in less than new infections, active cases — those that carry high transmission risks — rose to another fresh high of 23,598.

After Selangor, Sabah contributed 299 cases, followed by Melaka with 239 cases and Kuala Lumpur with 222 cases.

Dr Noor Hisham said 304 of the new cases were related to clusters linked to lockups, immigration detention depots and prisons, namely the Jalan Harapan prison cluster in Selangor (285 cases); Pagar Siput cluster in Johor (eight), Tembok Mempaga cluster in Pahang (five), Pagar Bentong cluster in Pahang (two), Tembok Gajah cluster in Johor (one), Tembok cluster in Kedah (one), Kolam Air cluster in Kedah (one), and the Seberang Perai prison cluster in Penang (one).

As for the eight deaths today, they were five men and three women aged between 39 and 79 years. Three of the casualties were recorded in Selangor, two in Johor, and one each in Kelantan, Kedah and Negeri Sembilan.

Five more clusters found, three linked to the workplace

The Health Ministry also identified five more new Covid-19 clusters, three of which are linked to workplaces in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Johor.

The three workplace-linked clusters are: the Jalan Galah cluster in Klang, Selangor with 22 cases; the Jalan Datuk cluster involving Titiwangsa, Kepong and Lembah Pantai in Kuala Lumpur with 23 cases; and the Pekeliling cluster in Johor Bahru, Johor with 27 cases.

The remainder two clusters are the Kampung Baharu cluster which spans Johor Bahru and Pontian in Johor with 35 cases; and the Jalan Rasah cluster in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, with 17 cases.

This means there are now 225 active clusters in the country, out of the 511 identified so far.

A total of 286 clusters have been declared closed or ended, as no new cases were reported in 28 days. These include three clusters which came to an end today, namely the Teduh cluster in Sabah, the Jaya cluster in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan, and the Berendam cluster in Melaka.
