Covid-19: Malaysia reports 2,985 new cases, Selangor overtakes Sabah as state with highest number of cumulative infections

KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 13): Malaysia reported 2,985 new Covid-19 cases today, which brought the total number of infected individuals in the country to 144,518 so far. 

Four Covid-19-related deaths were reported today as Selangor overtook Sabah as the state with the highest number of cumulative Covid-19 cases so far, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press conference today.

The Health Ministry said via Twitter today the four deaths brought the total number of Covid-19-related fatalities in the country to 563 so far.

The Ministry said the deceased comprised three men and one woman aged between 19 and 77.

Meanwhile, Dr Noor Hisham said in a separate statement today three of the deceased were from Sabah while one was from Johor.

“The 563 (death) cases (so far) account for 0.39% of the total number of (Covid-19) cases (in Malaysia),” he said.

The 2,985 newly-confirmed Covid-19 infected individuals reported across Malaysia today comprise two imported cases and 2,983 persons who were infected via local transmission, Dr Noor Hisham said.

Among those who were infected via local transmission, 2,109 cases involved Malaysians while 874 were foreigners, he said.

Selangor overtook Sabah today as the State with the highest number of cumulative Covid-19 infections to-date at 42,128 after reporting 837 new cases today.

He said Sabah’s cumulative number of cases stood at 41,899 so far after the State recorded 450 new cases today.

Across Malaysia, Dr Noor Hisham said the country’s total number of active Covid-19 cases stood at 32,377 so far.

He said 197 Covid-19 patients are being treated in intensive care units and 79 of them require respiratory assistance.

Dr Noor Hisham said the Health Ministry reported today 994 persons have recovered from Covid-19.

“This brings the (country’s) total number of fully-recovered Covid-19 cases [to] 111,578,” he said.
