Covid-19: Malaysia reports 3,170 new cases and another 12 deaths

KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 21): Malaysia has logged another 3,170 new Covid-19 cases today, with 12 more fatalities. This pushed cumulative coronavirus infections in the country to date to 172,549, while the death toll climbed to 642, according to Ministry of Health (MoH) director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Of the new cases, eight were imported, while the remainder 3,162 were domestic transmissions involving 2,475 locals and 687 foreigners, Dr Noor Hisham told a press conference.

As for the new fatalities, he said all were Malaysians — comprising eight men and four women, aged between 47 and 84.

Meanwhile, 2,490 more patients have recovered and were discharged in the last 24 hours, raising total recoveries to 130,152 or 75.4% of overall infections. But as recoveries continue to lag new infections, active cases that carry transmission risks reached another new high of 41,755.

Kuala Lumpur took over from Selangor as the highest daily case contributor today with 576, presenting 18.2% of the latest confirmed infections.

Selangor reported 545 cases, followed by Johor (423), Sabah (401), Perak (245), Penang (171), Negeri Sembilan (171), Kedah (156), Kelantan (135), Sarawak (132), Malacca (106), Terengganu (57), Pahang (48), Putrajaya (33), Labuan (32) and Perlis (8).

The four States of Selangor, Sabah, Johor and Negeri Sembilan, together with Kuala Lumpur now account for more than 142,000 cases, or 82.3% of the country's total Covid-19 infections.

Selangor leads with the highest cumulative infections to-date at 51,181 cases, followed by Sabah (45,409), Kuala Lumpur (19,987), Johor (14,962) and Negeri Sembilan (10,532 cases).
