PETALING JAYA (Jan 22): A fishmonger has been given one month in jail and a fine of RM1,000 in a Magistrate’s Court here for hitting his wife on the head after reading text messages on her phone.

According to a report by The Star, V N Loganathan, 39, was accused of using criminal force on his spouse G. Anita Davi, 36, at an apartment unit in Damansara Damai at about 2pm on Jan 18.

The charge under Section 352A of the Penal Code carries an imprisonment for a term which may extend to six months or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction.

He pleaded guilty before magistrate M Barath today.

The English daily reported that Loganathan and his wife, Anita, started arguing after he saw WhatsApp messages from a male friend on her phone.

Overtaken by anger, Loganathan then hit his wife on the back of her head and hands. Anita later went out and lodged a police report.

The magistrate who handed down the sentence told Loganathan he will have to serve another month in jail if he fails to pay the fine.
