KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 16): Covid-19 recoveries hit a record high of 5,718 today, well above the 2,720 new daily infections, the Health Ministry said.
The previous highest number of recoveries was recorded on Sunday with 4,525. Today is the third straight day with more new recoveries recorded than new infections.
The country's total Covid-19 infections climbed further to 269,165, while total recoveries stood at 224,053.
The total number of active cases was down to 44,129, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said at a press briefing today.
Eight more people died from the virus as of noon today, raising the Covid-19 death toll to 983.
Selangor continued to top the list of new infections with 1,300 cases. Out of these, 1,067 were detected from active clusters and close contact tracing, said Dr Noor Hisham.
This was followed by Johor with 451 cases, Kuala Lumpur with 318, Sarawak (193), Sabah (132), Penang (72), Perak (69), Negeri Sembilan (64), Kedah (38), Terengganu (26), Pahang (19), Kelantan (17), Melaka (14), Putrajaya (six) and Labuan (one).
The new infections were all local transmission of which 1,391 cases or 51.1% involved Malaysians with the remaining 1,329 cases comprised foreigners.
Of the eight new Covid-19 deaths, seven were Malaysians and one was a foreigner. They were aged between 47 and 86 years, said Dr Noor Hisham.
Three of the deceased were from Kuala Lumpur, two from Selangor, and one each from Sabah, Sarawak and Negeri Sembilan.
Currently, 253 Covid-19 patients are being treated in intensive care units, with 118 of them needing respiratory assistance.
Earlier today, Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced that the Movement Control Order will be extended for another two weeks in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Johor and Penang from Feb 19 until March 4.
He added that all other states, with the exception of Perlis and Sarawak, will be placed under the Conditional Movement Control Order.
