Report: World's first 'space hotel' to be ‘operational as early as 2027’

KUALA LUMPUR (March 2): The world's first 'space hotel' will start construction in 2025 and “could be operational as early as 2027”, the Daily Mail reported yesterday.

Called the Voyager Station, it will be developed by Orbital Assembly Corporation (OAC) and will have amenities such as restaurants, a cinema, spa and rooms for up to 400 people.

According to the report, the space hotel will be “a large circle and rotate to generate artificial gravity that will be set at a similar level to the gravity found on the surface of the Moon”.

Voyager Station will also have “a series of rings, with a number of 'modules' connect to the outermost of the rings.

Some of the 24 modules will be run by the Gateway Foundation and “will be for things like crew quarters, air, water and power”, said the report.

The other modules will be leased or sold to private corporations or governments.

One of the 20x12 metre modules can be purchased to hold a private villa or multiple modules for a hotel with spa or cinema.

Governments can also use the station to house their science modules or as a training centre for astronauts bound for Mars.

The Daily Mail did not provide details on the cost of such a venture or how much it will cost to stay in Voyager Station but OAC revealed that “costs are getting cheaper” as reusable launch vehicles such as the SpaceX Falcon 9 are now available.  

“This will be the next industrial revolution,” said founder of Gateway Foundation, John Blincow.

He added the venture “will create a new space industry”.

When completed, it will be the largest human constructed object ever put into space.
