KUALA LUMPUR (March 9): Star Media Group Bhd has appointed Tan Sri Chor Chee Heung as its independent and non-executive chairman, effective March 15.

Chor, 66, will replace Datuk Fu Ah Kiow, who resigned as the group’s director and chairman on March 1.

According to a bourse filing, Chor was the member of Parliament for the Alor Setar constituency in Kedah for five terms between 1990 and 2013.

He was also the minister of housing and local government, deputy minister of home affairs and deputy minister of finance between 2008 and 2013.

Prior to that, he was appointed parliamentary secretary in the Ministry of Transport and deputy home minister between 1996 and 2004.

Between 2015 and 2017, Chor was commissioner of the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) and an advisor at Melati Ehsan Holdings Bhd.

He was also an independent director of JAKS Resources Bhd — which filed a counterclaim against Star Media Group after the group initiated legal action over the purchase of its land in Petaling Jaya, Selangor — from 2004 to 2007.

Chor was also made an independent director at Tenaga Nasional Bhd between 2015 and 2018.

Star Media shares closed 2.5 sen or 5.75% lower at 41 sen, valuing the company at RM324.96 million.
