KUALA LUMPUR (April 18): Malaysia reported today 2,195 newly-confirmed Covid-19 infected individuals, a drop from yesterday’s 2,331 cases, as the number of fresh infections in pandemic hotspots Sarawak and Selangor fell. The country reported today eight Covid-19-related deaths.

Health director general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said via Twitter today that the 2,195 new Covid-19 cases brought the cumulative number of pandemic-infected persons in the country to 375,054 so far.

Dr Noor Hisham said Sarawak reported the highest number of daily new Covid-19 cases at 508, followed by Selangor and Johor at 431 and 387 respectively.

Elsewhere, he said Putrajaya and Perlis saw three fresh Covid-19 cases each, while Labuan registered six newly-confirmed infected persons.

Yesterday, Selangor reported the highest number of new Covid-19 cases at 751, followed by Sarawak at 513, according to Dr Noor Hisham.

In a separate Facebook post today, Dr Noor Hisham said out of the 2,195 newly reported Covid-19 cases across the country today, 2,185 individuals were infected locally, while 10 are imported cases.

Out of the 2,185 individuals infected locally, he said 1,837 persons are Malaysians, while 348 individuals are foreigners.

“The 10 imported cases comprise two Malaysians and eight foreigners,” he said.

According to him, the total number of active Covid-19 cases in the country stood at 19,854 so far.

Meanwhile, the eight Covid-19-related deaths reported today brings the nation’s cumulative number of pandemic-linked fatalities to 1,378 so far.

Dr Noor Hisham said the eight deaths reported today involve Malaysians.

He said 219 Covid-19 patients are currently being treated at hospitals’ intensive care units across the country.

Out of the 219 patients, 90 are intubated to help them breathe, according to him.

Meanwhile, Malaysia reported 1,427 individuals having recovered from Covid-19 today, according to Dr Noor Hisham.

The 1,427 individuals bring the cumulative number of persons who have recovered from Covid-19 in the country thus far to 353,822, he said.

Dr Noor Hisham’s separate statement provided more details on the Covid-19 situation in Malaysia.

He said the eight deceased reported today comprised six men and two women aged between 37 and 90.

According to Dr Noor Hisham, the eight Covid-19 related deaths involved two fatalities each in Selangor and Kelantan, and one each in Sarawak, Sabah, Penang and Kuala Lumpur.

Meanwhile, the nation identified five new Covid-19 clusters today, which brought the total number of pandemic clusters in the country to 1,520 so far. 

Dr Noor Hisham said two new clusters each were detected today in Selangor and Sarawak, while another was found in Johor. 

He said the five new Covid-19 clusters involve three workplace clusters, and one cluster each within the community and school.

Meanwhile, 14 Covid-19 clusters across the country ended today and the figure brought the nation’s total number of pandemic clusters which have ended to 1,182 so far, according to him.

“There are 338 active clusters (across the country),” he said.
