KUALA LUMPUR (May 24): Malaysia reported 6,509 new Covid-19 cases today — the sixth consecutive day the country is reporting over 6,000 cases per day — down from yesterday's all-time high of 6,976. But daily fatalities linked to the coronavirus climbed to a new high of 61.

With the new additions, cumulative Covid-19 cases in the country have now reached 518,600, while the death toll stood at 2,309, according to Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement. Selangor continued to contribute the highest number of new infections, with 2,049 new cases, followed by Sarawak (536), Johor and Kuala Lumpur (468 each), Kelantan (451), Penang (384), Kedah (348), Melaka (329), Negeri Sembilan (329), Terengganu (263), Pahang (257), Perak (231), Sabah (184), Labuan (171), Putrajaya (40) and Perlis (7).

As for the new fatalities, 16 deaths were from Selangor, 11 from Johor, six each from Melaka and Penang, five from Kuala Lumpur, four from Kedah, three each from Sarawak, Negeri Sembilan and Pahang, two from Terengganu, and one each from Perak and Labuan.

Daily recoveries, meanwhile, came in at 3,452, of which 711 were patients in intensive care, with 369 requiring ventilators for respiratory assistance.

As new infections continued to surpass daily recoveries, active cases jumped past the 60,000 mark to 60,018, from 57,022 yesterday.
 
The ministry also identified 20 new Covid-19 clusters today — eight of which were from workplaces. Of the remainder, six were community clusters, three were religious centre clusters, one cluster of higher education institution, one high risk cluster, and one imported cluster.

To date, the nation has identified 2,045 Covid-19 clusters, of which 1,475 have been declared ended, leaving 570 active clusters.
