Johor’s Sultan Ibrahim urges Putrajaya to impose full lockdown if Covid-19 shows no sign of abating

KUALA LUMPUR (May 27): Johor’s Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar (pictured) has urged the federal government to impose a full lockdown if Covid-19 new cases show no sign of abating. 

On his official Facebook account yesterday, Sultan Ibrahim has also called all levels of society to commit to a self-lockdown to break the chain of Covid-19 infections. 

“Over 7,400 cases alone today (May 26). This is frightening and we need almost all facets of society to stay home to break the chain of infection. The virus is spread through the mingling of people. 

“We must not only be disciplined enough to stay home but must realise that by going to public places or even just a neighbour’s home, we could get ourselves infected unknowingly, or we could be carrying the virus and passing it on to others. It is selfish to only think of ourselves! Think of others too!,” His Majesty stressed. 

Sultan Ibrahim also expressed sympathy to all frontliners, especially medical staff, who have had to bear the brunt of the virus’ onslaught. 

“We can see for ourselves their exhaustion and depression, yet they diligently stick to their duties and tasks. Remember, Covid-19 is not the only disease they have to deal with.  

“Have pity on them. We must all do our part to reduce the burden on them and break the chain of infection for our greater good,” said His Majesty.  

Sultan Ibrahim added that he has spoken with the Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah by phone yesterday and was updated on the latest Covid-19 developments. 

“The emergence of new variants is also frightening, and the virus is now airborne too. If infections continue to rise, I worry even more variants of Covid-19 will appear. 

“In these uncertain times, I also urge those who are able to step forward and help others who have fallen on hard times, in any way they can,” said His Majesty. 

Malaysia’s new Covid-19 cases reached another record high of 7,478 yesterday, with 63 more deaths related to the coronavirus in the past 24 hours, a new daily high fatality rate, raising the death toll to 2,432.
