KUALA LUMPUR (May 28): Malaysia posted another record high new Covid-19 cases with 8,290 infections, up from 7,857 yesterday, raising total cas4es to 549,514.

This is the first time the country has breached the 8,000 level for daily cases.

Health Director General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a tweet that Selangor remains the state with the most new infections at 2,052, followed by Kelantan (851) and Kuala Lumpur (830).

Elsewhere, Johor posted 762 new cases, Sarawak (698), Kedah (544), Negeri Sembilan (520), Penang (421), Perak (405), Melaka (380), Sabah (308), Pahang (254), Terengganu (207), Putrajaya (44), Perlis (8) and Labuan (6).

Meanwhile, a total of 61 Covid-19 deaths were reported today.

Daily recoveries totalled 4,814, raising the total number of discharged patients to 474,139, for a recovery rate of 86.3%.

Active cases that carry transmission risks rose to 72,823, of which 808 patients are now in intensive care, with 403 requiring respiratory help.

The Ministry of Health had earlier this month predicted that lax compliance with standard operating procedures could push the number of daily Covid-19 cases past 8,000 in the first week of June.

Meanwhile, the ministry identified 21 new Covid-19 clusters today, including six workplace clusters, six community clusters, four religious event-linked clusters, and three education-related clusters.

To date, 2,123 Covid-19 clusters have been discovered, of which 1,509 have been declared ended. That leaves 614 active clusters.
