KUALA LUMPUR (June 17): Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said he is working towards seeking the consent of the Sultan of Selangor to reconvene the state legislative assembly as soon as possible.

This follows the decree from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, yesterday for Parliament to reconvene to discuss the Emergency Ordinance as well as government spending to combat Covid-19, Amirudin said in a statement today.

“The decree of His Royal Highness Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Malay rulers shows the concern of the rulers towards lives and livelihood, and is appreciated and long-awaited,” Amirudin said.

“I also welcome and uphold the stand by His Royal Highness and the Malay rulers in defending the supremacy of the nation’s constitutional democratic system so that the check and balance between the executive, legislative and judiciary branches can be implemented continually,” he said.

Amirudin added that the royal decree for the Dewan Rakyat and the state legislative assemblies to reconvene, is in line with the people’s aspiration so that efforts to address the Covid-19 crisis can be scrutinised, and its improvements debated, as well as to protect the supremacy of the Federal Constitution.

“Today, I will engage in a discussion with the speaker of the Selangor state legislative assembly to begin deliberations on the implementation of the royal decree as soon as possible, followed by a presentation of the findings to His Royal Highness Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Al-Haj of Selangor for his consent for the purpose of reconvening the Selangor state assembly soonest,” he said.

Yesterday, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong said Parliament should be reconvened “as soon as possible” to allow lawmakers to debate the Emergency Ordinance and the National Recovery Plan.

Parliament sittings have been suspended since the first quarter of the year, following the invocation of the Emergency Ordinance, which Putrajaya said will provide the government with the ability to mobilise all necessary resources to combat the outbreak.

On Tuesday (June 15), Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said he expects Parliament to reconvene by August or September, when daily Covid-19 cases are projected to drop to below 2,000 and social sectors are reopened in stages. The emergency is currently scheduled to be lifted by Aug 1.
