KUALA LUMPUR (June 18): Malaysia’s new daily Covid-19 cases climbed to 6,440 today — the highest number recorded since last Friday when there were 6,849 confirmed cases.

This brought total infections in the country to 685,204.

Today’s cases represent a 7.76% positivity rate, from 82,969 individuals tested across the country.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a statement that Selangor has the highest infections today at 2,095, followed by Negeri Sembilan (870), and Kuala Lumpur (816).

Seventy-four more Covid-19 related deaths were confirmed today — 28 in Selangor, nine in Negeri Sembilan, seven in Sarawak, seven in Johor, six in Sabah, five in Labuan, four in Kuala Lumpur, three in Melaka, two in Pahang, as well as one each in Perak, Terengganu and Kedah — raising total fatalities to 4,276.

Active cases, which carry high transmission risks, dropped further to 65,602 from 66,097 the day before. Furthermore, daily recoveries continued outpacing new infections at 6,861, bringing the tally of recoveries so far to 615,326.

The number of patients in intensive care units declined to 894 today, of whom 451 needed ventilators to breathe.

The ministry also reported 23 new clusters today, comprising 17 workplace clusters, four community clusters, while the remaining clusters are linked to a high-risk group and detention centre.

To date, 2,580 clusters have been reported in the country while 1,770 have been declared ended.
