MIAMI (June 29): A town inspector had assured the residents of Champlain Towers South in Surfside, Florida that their building was safe a month after an engineering report stated that the building has structural safety issues in 2018, reported Reuters.

According to the news report, the inspection report by the engineering firm in 2018 discovered major structural deterioration in the parking garage beneath the 40-year-old Champlain Towers South.

However, a local inspector later met with the residents of the building and assured them that the building was “in very good shape”, according to the minutes of a November 2018 meeting.

On June 24, part of the 12-storey Champlain Towers South’s building structure collapsed in the early hours as most of the residents slept. As of June 27, more than 150 people were reported missing and the death toll stood at nine.
