KUALA LUMPUR (July 2): Oral submissions for former deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s criminal breach of trust (CBT), corruption and money laundering trial is slated to resume on Aug 5, 2021 , according to his lawyer Hisyam Teh Poh Teik.

Hisyam told theedgemarkets.com that High Court Judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah yesterday set Aug 5, 6, 9, 11, 13 and 24 for the prosecution and defence to make their oral submissions.

Once the submissions are complete, Justice Sequerah will announce the date of his decision on whether Zahid will need to enter his defence against the CBT, corruption and money laundering charges, according to Hisyam.

Justice Sequerah, who initially set June 28, 29 and 30 as well as July 1 and 2 (today) for the trial’s oral submissions, fixed the new dates due to Malaysia’s Covid-19-driven movement restrictions to curb the pandemic, according to Hisyam.

If the prosecution is successful in proving a prima facie case against Zahid, who is also the Umno president, he will then be asked to enter his defence against the charges, Hisyam said.

In legal context, the Latin phrase prima facie indicates a situation where there is enough evidence for a trial to proceed.

Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Datuk Raja Rozela Raja Toran is the lead prosecutor in the case.

Zahid is facing 47 charges involving millions of ringgit belonging to his charity arm Akalbudi Foundation.

Akalbudi Foundation is also known as Yayasan Akalbudi.

The 47 charges comprise 27 for money laundering, eight for corruption and 12 for CBT.
