SAN FRANCISCO (July 5): The high cost of living in the San Francisco Bay Area has apparently pushed Apple Inc to consider decentralisation, reported AppleInsider yesterday (July 4).

Quoting Bloomberg's Power On newsletter published on July 4, AppleInsider said hiring in Silicon Valley is notoriously difficult due to the high cost of living in the area, making it extremely hard for Apple's hiring teams, which also have the issue of diversity in mind.

The technology company is reportedly ramping up its decentralisation efforts into other areas away from its iconic Apple Park HQ in Cupertino which currently houses about 12,000 employees in a 2.8 million sq ft ring-shaped main building.

The realisation of a decentralised workforce only came about for Apple's executives recently, though some members had apparently been pushing for it for years, said AppleInsider.

Proponents include COO Jeff Williams, who has championed the cost-benefit of more offices; senior vice president, hardware technologies Johny Srouji; and senior vice president of internet software and services Eddy Cue.

Apple is pushing to increase its footprint with new campuses in development (Austin, Texas and North Carolina) in addition to numerous offices globally. For instance, Apple has been taking up new office spaces in Cork, Ireland, expanding its New York City offices and setting aside EUR1 billion for a silicon design centre in Germany.

Meanwhile, back in June, Apple announced a hybrid work arrangement plan for employees to return to offices for three days a week starting in the fall. However, response to this has been mixed with some Apple staff writing to the company's top brass seeking for more options.
