Malaysia posts 9,105 Covid-19 cases on July 11, two-thirds of them in Selangor and KL

KUALA LUMPUR (July 11): Malaysia reported 9,105 Covid-19 infections today, the third consecutive day above the 9,000 level and raising the cumulative total to 836,296.

A total of 91 deaths related to the coronavirus were reported across the country in the 24 hours as of noon, taking total fatalities to 6,158, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement.

He said Selangor continued to account for the most new cases at 4,682 – a new record-high for the state – bringing total cases to 286,352.

Kuala Lumpur accounted for 1,247 cases, followed by Negeri Sembilan (541), Johor (392), Kedah (382), Pahang (300) and Melaka (278).

Meanwhile, Sabah reported 271 cases and Sarawak 270 cases, followed by Penang (243), Perak (207), Kelantan (150), Labuan (54), Putrajaya (49), Terengganu (38) and Perlis (1).

Large-scale screening

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob today said the increase in the number of Covid-19 cases of late is due to large-scale screening, especially in areas under the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO).

He said the government had projected Covid-19 cases to increase when the EMCO was enforced in 36 mukims in Selangor and 16 localities in Kuala Lumpur.

Recovery rate drops to 88.8%

Dr Noor Hisham said active Covid-19 cases rose further to 87,841, as daily recoveries,at 5,194,  was well below the 9,105 new infections.

The country’s total number of discharged cases stood at 742,297, giving a recovery rate of 88.8%, when compared with cumulative infections of 836,296.

The number of patients in intensive care units totalled 961, of which 455 are on ventilators.

19 new clusters, 13 from workplace

The Ministry of Health reported 19 new Covid-19 clusters, bringing the number of active clusters in the country to 865.

Thirteen of the new clusters are workplace related, five are community clusters and the remaining one is from the high risk category.

To date, the ministry has identified 3,077 clusters, with 2,212 having been declared ended.

R0 stands at 1.13

‘Meanwhile, Malaysia's basic reproduction number (R-naught or R0) for Covid-19 infections nationwide as of July 10 stood at 1.13, with Putrajaya having the highest R0 of 1.20.

The R0 or Rt projects the average number of people that each new Covid-19 patient will infect, or what is termed the effective reproduction number. An R0 of less than 1.0 means the infection is not spreading.
