Malaysia's cumulative administered Covid-19 vaccine doses topped 17 million on July 25

KUALA LUMPUR (July 26): Malaysia's cumulative number of administered Covid-19 vaccine doses topped 17 million as of yesterday (July 25) at 17.32 million after country recorded a daily figure of 399,135 shots, according to the latest updates on Twitter today by the country's Special Committee for Ensuring Access to Covid-19 Vaccine Supply (JKJAV), citing data from the Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force (CITF).

The country’s total number of administered doses was 16.9 million as of Saturday (July 24).

However, the daily figure of administered shots at 399,135 yesterday was lower than the 417,738 doses on Saturday, according to the task force.

Out of the vaccine doses given out yesterday, 281,481 were first shots, while 117,654 were second doses, the CITF added.

Among the states and federal territories, Selangor reported the highest daily number of first doses administered at 73,921 yesterday, followed by Kuala Lumpur at 43,101, the task force said.

As for second doses, Kuala Lumpur saw the highest daily figure at 27,990, followed by Selangor's 27,542, according to the CITF.

Cumulatively, the task force said the 17.32 million shots administered so far comprised 11.8 million first doses for 36.1% of Malaysia's total population and 5.52 million second shots for 16.9% of the population.

The Department of Statistics Malaysia's (DOSM) latest data showed that the country's population stood at about 33 million people.

Meanwhile, according to the CITF, collectively in the Klang Valley — comprising Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Selangor — as of yesterday, total first and second doses administered stood at 4.83 million and 1.65 million respectively.

Elsewhere, the total number of administered first doses was the highest in Sarawak at 1.66 million, followed by Johor at 880,832, said the task force.

As for second doses, Sarawak also recorded the highest cumulative number at 1.14 million, followed by Johor at 398,389, the CITF added.

Malaysia's Covid-19 vaccination scheme started on Feb 24, with Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin taking the first jab.

Based on the government's target of having 80% of the population fully vaccinated against Covid-19 to achieve herd immunity, the country will need to have about 26 million people completing their two-dose vaccination.

News reports in June, quoting National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme Coordinating Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, said that the government is targeting to administer by December about 52 million vaccine doses to around 26 million people, accounting for the target of some 80% of the population.

The number of shots to be administered from June to August is reportedly expected to more than double from 5.8 million to 14.4 million amid expectations of faster vaccine deliveries from suppliers.
