Malaysia’s daily Covid-19 vaccine doses administered up at 514,674 on Aug 5

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 6): Malaysia’s daily number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered rose to 514,674 yesterday (Aug 5), from 494,214 a day earlier, according to the latest updates on Twitter today by the country's Special Committee for Ensuring Access to Covid-19 Vaccine Supply (JKJAV), citing data from the Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force (CITF).

The CITF said the 514,674 vaccine doses administered yesterday comprised 220,839 first jabs and 293,835 second shots given to recipients.

Meanwhile, the country’s total number of administered Covid-19 vaccine doses stood at 23.16 million as of yesterday, comprising 15.16 million first shots for about 46.4% of the nation’s population and eight million second jabs for about 24.5% of the population.

The Covid-19 vaccination scheme in Malaysia started on Feb 24, 2021, with Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin taking the first jab.

Based on the government's target of having 80% of the population fully vaccinated against Covid-19 to achieve herd immunity, the country will need to have about 26 million people completing their two-dose vaccination.

Yesterday, Malaysia's new Covid-19 cases climbed past 20,000 for the first time to a record high of 20,596, from 19,819 a day earlier, according to Health director general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement.

The latest daily figure raised the cumulative number of Covid-19 infections in the country to 1.2 million so far, Dr Noor Hisham added.

According to him, the nation’s cumulative number of Covid-19-linked deaths breached the 10,000 level yesterday at 10,019 after 164 more fatalities were reported.
