KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 13):  Malaysia today reported 21,468 new daily Covid-19 infections — the second consecutive day of cases staying above the 21,000 mark — but retreated from the all-time high of 21,668 yesterday.

This is the fifth time the country has recorded more than 20,000 daily Covid-19 cases.

Also reported were 277 more fatalities — of which 96 were dead before reaching the hospital, involving 65 Malaysians and 31 foreigners. This lifted total deaths linked to the coronavirus so far to 11,968, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a statement.

Active cases which carry high transmission risks climbed to 241,187 from 237,021 the day before, as new recoveries again came in lower than new infections at 17,025.

This raised total recoveries to 1.11 million, from 1.36 million cumulative infections detected so far.

12.6% of new cases are those who have completed their two-dose regime

Dr Noor Hisham said 2,703 cases or 12.6% of today’s cases had completed two-dose vaccinations, meaning they were fully inoculated.

Fully-vaccinated individuals are defined as someone who has received two doses of Covid-19 vaccines for more than 14 days.

Meanwhile, 20,798 or 96.9% of the latest cases are in Category 1 (no symptoms) and 2 (mild symptoms), while 670 cases or 3.1% are in Categories 3 (patients with pneumonia), 4 (with pneumonia requiring oxygen therapy) and 5 (critical cases needing assisted ventilation).

A total of 1,075 patients are now in intensive care units, including 537 who need ventilators to breathe.

Selangor again topped the list with the most new infections at 7,449, up from 6,278 a day ago, followed by Kuala Lumpur (2,183, down from 2,436 previously), Kedah (1,807), Sabah (1,654), Johor (1,485), Penang (1,316), Kelantan (1,088), Negeri Sembilan (974), Perak (940), Melaka (723), Sarawak (715), Pahang (572), Terengganu (440), Putrajaya (66), Perlis (50), and Labuan (six).

The Ministry also detected 41 new clusters. To date, 4,120 clusters have been reported nationwide, including 2,827 that have been declared ended.
