KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 20): The percentage of fully vaccinated Klang Valley adult population has reached 76% as of yesterday (Aug 19). This is equivalent to 4.7 million persons, according to the latest updates on Twitter today by the country’s Special Committee for Ensuring Access to Covid-19 Vaccine Supply (JKJAV).

The Klang Valley, which consists of the state of Selangor and federal territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, is the third highest in terms of percentage of fully inoculated adult population, behind Labuan (90.2%) and Sarawak (83%).

Meanwhile, the total number of fully vaccinated persons hit 12.08 million, representing 37% of the total population.

The data, which was cited from the Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force (CITF), showed that Malaysia had as of yesterday administered the first dose of vaccine to 54.5% of the country’s population, representing 17.81 million people.

Malaysia’s daily administered Covid-19 vaccine doses slipped to 517,692 on Aug 19 from 531,114 a day earlier. While there was a decline in the daily number of vaccine doses administered, the cumulative number of doses administered inched closer to 30 million, at 29.89 million on Aug 19.

Of the 517,692 vaccine doses administered yesterday, the daily figure comprised 180,810 first-dose recipients and 336,882 second-dose recipients.

Based on the government’s target of having 80% of the population fully vaccinated against Covid-19 to achieve herd immunity, the country will need to have about 26 million people completing their two-dose vaccination.

Yesterday, new Covid-19 cases once again topped a new high at 22,948 cases, the second consecutive day it has topped the 22,000 mark. On Aug 18, the number of new cases hit 22,242 despite Malaysia having among the fastest vaccination rates in the world.

This is the seventh time the country has recorded more than 20,000 daily cases. The new infections were detected from the testing of 163,264 individuals across the country in the 24 hours before noon today, indicating a positivity rate of 14.06%.

Nevertheless, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah mentioned in a statement that the number of daily fatalities declined to 178 — the lowest seen in 13 days — from over 200 fatalities reported since Aug 7. This brings the coronavirus death toll in the country to 13,480.
