KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 3): The Ministry of Health (MoH) reported a total of 19,378 new Covid-19 infections as of noon today, down from 20,988 on Thursday.

According to MoH, among new infections detected today, 19,364 were local transmissions, while 14 were imported cases.

Today's new confirmed cases brought the country's total number of Covid-19 cases to 1.81 million.

There were 22,399 individuals who recovered from the coronavirus today, which in turn brought down the number of active cases that carry transmission risks to 259,189, from 262,540 the day before. Total recoveries stood at 1.53 million as at Sept 3, representing a recovery rate of 84.67%.

Sadly, 330 more lives were lost to Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, pushing the country’s death toll to 17,521 since the pandemic began in March last year.

There are 975 patients in intensive care units, of whom 463 required breathing assistance.

Selangor remained the state with the most daily cases at 3,613, but lower against 4,073 reported yesterday. There are 4,394 new confirmed infections in the Klang Valley, as Kuala Lumpur detected 740 new cases, and Putrajaya 41 cases.

Other states that recorded more than 1,000 new infections are Sarawak (2,464), Sabah (2,404), Johor (2,331), Penang (1,726), Kedah (1,470), Perak (1,389) and Kelantan (1,356).

On the remaining states and federal territories, Kuala Lumpur posted 740 cases, followed by Pahang (559), Terengganu (532), Melaka (399), Negeri Sembilan (270), Perlis (80), Putrajaya (41) and Labuan (four).

Among new infections today, 13,485 cases or nearly 70% were patients who either were not vaccinated or had received only one dose. The remaining 5,893 Covid-19 patients, or 30.4%, are fully vaccinated.

The asymptomatic or those with mild symptoms continued to make up the bulk of new cases, with 19,046 or 98.3% being in Categories 1 (no symptoms) and 2 (mild symptoms), while only 1.7% or 332 cases were Category 3,4 and 5.

RO declines to 0.97 on Thursday

The Ministry said the country’s basic reproduction number for the coronavirus, the R0 (pronounced R-Naught), fell to 0.97 on Sept 2 from 0.99 previously.

Sarawak remained the highest R0 at 1.20, rising from 1.18 previously. This was followed by Perlis (1.15) and Johor (1.09).

Other states with R0 more or equal than 1.0 are Terengganu (1.07), Sabah (1.06), Penang (1.05), Kedah (1.03), Kelantan (1.03), Perak (1.01), Pahang (1.0).

The R0 projects the average number of people each new Covid-19 patient will infect — or what is termed the effective reproduction number. An R0 of less than 1.0 means the infection is not spreading.

The remaining places recorded less than 1.0 as of yesterday, namely, Putrajaya at 0.95,  followed by Selangor (0.90), Melaka (0.88), Kuala Lumpur (0.81), Negeri Sembilan (0.81) and Labuan (0).

34 new clusters detected

An additional 34 Covid-19 clusters were detected today, comprising 20 workplace clusters, eight community clusters, four high risk groups clusters and one for higher education institutions (KPM) and another is related to a religious activity.

To date, 4,838 clusters have been reported nationwide, including 3,362 that have been declared ended, and 1,476 active ones.
