KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 10): Malaysia’s new Covid-19 cases were back above the 20,000 mark after a gap of four days at 21,176 today. This is the highest daily case tally of the outbreak in 13 days.
However, only 338 or 1.6% of today’s cases were in Categories 3, 4 and 5, while 20,838 cases or 98.4% were in Categories 1 and 2, the Health Ministry said.
The Ministry also reported 341 coronavirus-related fatalities today, bringing the country’s overall death toll to 19,827.
This is the fourth highest number of deaths on a single day after the 393 posted on Aug 26, 362 on Sept 4 and 361 on Sept 8.
Of the latest fatalities, 102 were brought-in-dead cases involving 82 Malaysians and 20 foreigners, Ministry director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a statement.
Selangor reported 102 fatalities, followed by Kedah with 86, Penang with 38 and Sabah with 28.
The number of recovered patients reported today was slightly higher than the new cases at 21,476. This resulted in active cases falling to 242,161.
Of the active cases, 935 patients were in intensive care units, including 455 on ventilators.
Sarawak remained the State or Federal Territory with the most new infections with 3,734 cases today.
Selangor was second with its new cases rising to 3,595 after staying below the 3,000 mark for four straight days.
Johor reported 2,297 new cases, followed by Sabah (2,246), Penang (1,939), Kedah (1,808), Kelantan (1,254), Perak (1,366), Pahang (853), Terengganu (776), Melaka (485), Kuala Lumpur (467), Negeri Sembilan (252), Perlis (77), Putrajaya (21) and Labuan (six).
Cumulatively, the nation has reported 1.94 million Covid-19 infections to date, of which 1.68 million patients have recovered.
30 of 37 new clusters involve workplace
The Health Ministry also reported 37 new Covid-19 clusters with a total of 974 infections, bringing the number of active clusters in the country to 1,455.
Thirty of the new clusters were related to the workplace, five involved the community, and two were linked to high-risk groups.
To date, the country has reported 5,059 Covid-19 clusters, of which 3,604 have ended.
