Malaysia’s new Covid-19 cases down to 14,990 on Sept 22 as Sarawak sees sharp drop in infections

KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 22): Malaysia's daily new Covid-19 infections fell to 14,990 today, from 15,759 yesterday, as Sarawak posted a significant drop in daily infections to below the 2,000 mark.

These brought the country's cumulative cases to 2,142,924, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Sarawak reported 1,712 infections today, compared with 3,732 yesterday.

Sabah's daily figure also fell to 1,199 from 1,291, while Kuala Lumpur's cases decreased to 338 from 359, Putrajaya's cases to 30 from 34, and Labuan's cases to three from 12.

97.7% of patients displayed mild or no symptoms

A total of 14,652 or 97.7% of today's cases had no symptoms (Category 1) or only mild symptoms (Category 2), Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a statement.

The remaining cases of 2.3% were in Category 3 (patients with pneumonia), Category 4 (patients with pneumonia requiring oxygen therapy) and Category 5 (critical patients requiring assisted ventilation).

The number of recovered patients reported today at 19,702 was once again higher than new cases.

These raised total recoveries to 1,917,085 for a recovery rate of 89.5%.

A total of 1,115 Covid-19 patients were warded in the intensive care units today, with 618 of them on ventilators.

Importance of ventilation in buildings

Meanwhile, Dr Noor Hisham stressed on the importance of ventilation in all types of buildings such as workplaces, business premises, educational institutions and houses of worship in curbing the spread of the virus.

"In general, there are three types of ventilation available in buildings, namely natural ventilation, air conditioning systems without mechanical ventilation, and air conditioning systems with mechanical ventilation," he said.

26 new clusters detected

The Health Ministry reported 26 more Covid-19 clusters today, including 13 workplace clusters.

To date, 5,354 clusters have been detected nationwide, of which 4,048 have been declared ended.
