KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 5): The East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project is slightly behind schedule at 23.96% completion as of Aug 31 this year, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong said, adding that this was due to Covid-19 restrictions.

He said the government, however, is committed to ensuring that the ECRL is completed according to its timeline. Wee was responding to a parliamentary question by member of Parliament (MP) for Dungun Wan Hassan Mohd Ramli.

“For Section A from Kota Bharu to Dungun, which includes six stations, the progress of the section is currently at 11.59%, behind the progress schedule of 12.01%.

“For Section B from Dungun to Temerloh, the progress is slightly ahead of schedule at 28.04%, while for Section C from Temerloh to Pelabuhan Klang, the government is still studying the best alignment to ensure the multiplier effects to the local economy,” he said.

Wee also shared that Section C is expected to be completed by Dec 31, 2027, 12 months later than the previous timeline. 

On Bumiputera participation in the ECRL project, the Ministry of Transport (MoT) is committed to ensuring 40% participation of local contractors in the project, amounting to RM8.6 billion.

“Out of this RM8.6 billion, 30% from it has to be allocated for Bumiputera contractors. 

“A committee established by the Cabinet, consisting of MoT, the Ministry of Finance and the Bumiputera Agenda Steering Unit (TERAJU) is looking into the matter and we have ensured that the main contractor China Communications Construction Company Ltd adheres to this (Bumiputera participation),” Wee said in a reply to another question from Pasir Salak MP Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman.
