KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 11): Bangi member of Parliament (MP) Dr Ong Kian Ming has tested positive for Covid-19.

In a series of tweets, the Democratic Action Party (DAP) representative shared the news upon getting his Covid-19 self-test result at 3.30pm on Monday.

"I was in Parliament today after lunch (Oct 11). Took my Covid-19 self-test at 330. Test came back positive. Confirmed by a PCR test an hour later.

"I have no symptoms. I will be quarantined at home for the next 10 days. I will spend the next hour or so alerting my close contacts," he said.

According to Ong, he tested negative for the virus in Parliament last Wednesday.

“[I am] not sure who or where I encountered a close contact. [I] will be spending the next two weeks catching up on constituency cases & writing a few press statements.

“We have to accept the fact that this virus is endemic. The testing protocols in parliament show that we can continue to work & operate normally. The vaccines also mean that a large majority of COVID19 cases among the vaccinated will have no or very less symptoms (like mine),” he added.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun announced earlier on the same day that MPs were now allowed to remove their face masks when debating in the august House.

He said this was decided after obtaining the views of the Health Ministry, which had carried out a Covid-19 risk assessment in Parliament.

“However, all members of Parliament must immediately put on their face mask once they are done speaking,” he was quoted by Bernama as saying.

At the time, Azhar also confirmed that no one in Parliament grounds had tested positive for Covid-19 in the current session so far.
