MIRI (Dec 13): A total of RM79.8 million was channelled to Sarawak to build and repair homes under the Hardcore Poor Housing Programme (PPRT) this year, Rural Development Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said.

That amount, he said, covers 405 new projects and the repair of 3,077 houses for those in need of housing programme assistance in the state.

He said GiatMara was responsible as the implementing agency for 180 units of newly built houses and 1,162 units of refurbished houses with an allocation of RM29.7 million, while the rest was implemented by the Sarawak Modernisation of Agriculture, Native Land and Regional Development Ministry (MANRED).

“PPRT is assistance by the government to build new or repair homes to provide housing that is safe and comfortable as the basis of Keluarga Malaysia’s (Malaysian Family) wellbeing.

“The PPRT target groups are the heads of Hardcore Poor and Poor households which are determined based on the poverty line income in force,” he said in a statement on Sunday (Dec 12).

According to the statement, Mahdzir on Sunday officiated the handover ceremony of outboard motors under the Income Boost Programme (PPP) and PPRT in Kampung Awat-Awat in Lawas.

The programme was also attended by Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan; Deputy Rural Development Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah and Deputy Transport Minister and Lawas MP Datuk Henry Sum Agong.

Mahdzir said until Nov 15, the construction of 800 new homes in Sarawak was 75% completed, while 10,000 units had been successfully refurbished.

“In Lawas, a total of RM1.5 million was spent on 15 new construction projects and 32 repair projects, while for the Limbang district it involved 19 new PPRT projects and 20 refurbishment projects with an allocation of RM1.5 million," said Mahdzir.

In addition, through PPP, a total of RM700,000 was channeled by the Rural Development Ministry (KPLB) to GiatMara Sarawak this year, of which RM500,000 in the form of outboard motors, were provided to 50 fishermen from the B40 group in Lawas.
