BUTTERWORTH (Jan 10): A missionary school in Butterworth, SK Assumption, is set to close its doors permanently in February 2022 as the landowner, Sri Avenue Sdn Bhd, where the school is sited on has requested for its property to be returned back.

A meeting chaired by deputy director of education Abdul Said Hussain had been held on Saturday (Jan 8) between the alumni, Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) and the state Education Department where the Education Ministry announced the closure of the school effective Feb 28, 2022, according to a statement reported by Malaysiakini.

Vernon Christopher Fernandez, spokesperson for the joint task force said that the meeting was only a pronouncement instead of seeking solutions for relevant parties.

“It was not a meeting to engage all stakeholders to seek solutions but simply a pronouncement of a decision made by higher-ups to inform the stakeholders, especially the students and their parents to accept the decision,” he said quoted by Malaysiakini.

“But there was insufficient time for many other interested parties to attend, sadly the most important being representatives of the landowner,” adding that the private landowners had requested for the land and building to be returned as soon as possible.

However, the joint task force has been given 14 days to find a solution on this matter.

SK Assumption was established in 1933 with its original location in Jalan New Ferry. It was then relocated to Bagan Dalam.

According to a report by Free Malaysia Today, Sri Avenue had built the current school building in 2008 with the understanding that the education ministry would buy over the development. Yet, the ministry has rejected the offer to buy.

Currently, the school has 55 students of which are due to be transferred to other schools.
