PETALING JAYA (Aug 12): It has been 60 years since Marilyn Monroe died from an overdose of barbiturates at the age of 36.

One of Hollywood’s brightest stars, the “blonde bombshell” started out as a pin-up model before hitting the silver screen with movies such as Some Like it Hot and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. She also appeared in the centrefold for the first issue of Playboy magazine and there were rumours that she had an affair with President John F Kennedy.

After three failed marriages, Monroe purchased a home in Los Angeles’ Brentwood neighbourhood for US$75,000 (about RM332,888). It was the first home the star, who was bounced between orphanages and foster homes as a child, bought on her own.

According to TopTenRealEstateDeals.com, the Mediterranean-style home measures 2,097 sq ft. Built in 1929, it comes with lots of green grass, flowers and citrus trees.

The home spreads over half an acre of prime Southern California real estate and has four bedrooms, exposed roof beams, a Mexican-tiled fireplace, and a swimming pool shaded by mature trees.

However, Monroe did not get to enjoy her new home for long. Four months after her purchase, Marilyn was found dead, face down and nude on the master bed with a phone in her hand. There are reports of her ghost haunting the mansion.

The estate was recently listed for US$6.9 million.
