LANGKAWI (Oct 25): Widad Business Group Sdn Bhd (WBG) hosted a ground-breaking ceremony for the first phase of Widad Langkasuka, a 2,000-acre mixed development with gross development value of RM40 billion.

Dubbed "Langkasuka Village", the first phase of Widad Langkasuka will be the home to a tournament-level golf course with a 400,000 sq ft built-up clubhouse, luxury villas surrounded by golf course, a mall, a rainforest-themed hotel, as well as serviced apartments and luxury condominiums.

The earthwork package of Langkasuka Village is worth RM40 million and it is targeted for completion by August 2023.

"I believe Widad Langkasuka will be an iconic product and a unique attraction to Langkawi when it is completely built in the future. Approximately sprawling across 2,000 acres, this integrated project includes a retail and shopping development, hospital, residences, recreation, higher education institution, and more. I would like to praise this project because it has fulfilled six main cores of the Kedah Development Plan 2035," said Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor in a press release. He also officiated at the ground-breaking ceremony on Sunday (Oct 23).

Confident of WBG's role in revolutionising tourism in the area whilst meeting global standards, WBG founder and group executive chairman Tan Sri Muhammad Ikmal Opat Abdullah said: "As a high-impact project, Widad Langkasuka will be built by focusing on the concept of providing conducive infrastructure and facilities to unleash Langkawi as a tourist destination of global standards."

Meanwhile, Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) chief executive officer Datuk Wira Arham Abdul Rahman expressed that the inauguration of Langkasuka Village will further boost the tourism businesses and activities on the island, particularly among the upmarket tourists.

"This initiative, which aligns well with the National Tourism Policy 2020-2030, will not only harness the competitiveness of Malaysia's tourism industry but will also enable local communities to achieve socio-economic developments. Mida will stand ready to facilitate and support Widad Business Group's project implementation and future expansion," Arham noted.

Upon completion, Widad Langkasuka will become a tourist city building on the model of Malay vernacular architecture, a global community based on the archipelago's heritage of designs that adopt local tropical features that are green and eco-friendly.
