GEORGE TOWN (April 17): Penang (pictured) hopes the Ministry of Home Affairs would consider easing the overly strict conditions introduced for new applicants of the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme.

In a statement here on Monday (April 17), state exco for tourism and creative economy Yeoh Soon Hin called on the Ministry of Home Affairs to review and revise the new MM2H conditions urgently, so it could keep pace with the changing needs of the economy, and make a meaningful contribution in the revival of the country’s economy after the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Expatriates play a vital role in bringing a multiplier effect to the economic development of Penang and Malaysia as a whole.

“Thus, it is beneficial for the country if conditions for new applicants of MM2H are fair, reasonable and effective to encourage potential residents or investors from abroad to stay with us,” he said.

According to Yeoh, Penang as one of the top tourist destinations in Southeast Asia is known for its vibrant multicultural scene, savoury street food and strategic geographical location, which have captivated many expatriates.

He said the MM2H Consultants Association found a 90% drop in the number of MM2H applicants since the stricter conditions were introduced in 2021.

“These unnecessary barriers have hindered attracting long-term foreign residents ever since.

“If such conditions persist, I believe many expatriates will no longer choose Malaysia, and will seek our neighbouring countries, which are easier for them to meet the eligibility requirements to settle there,” he added.
