KUALA LUMPUR (June 20): Sunway Healthcare Group has unveiled its flagship senior living residence, Sunway Sanctuary in Bandar Sunway, Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

Connected to the Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway Sanctuary sits atop Tower D of Sunway Medical Centre from Level 15 to 30. Catering to seniors above 55 years old, Sunway Sanctuary offers 235 units with studios, and one and two-bedroom serviced suites. Built-up ranges from 406 to 845 sq ft with eight types of layout. The price starts from RM8,050 monthly.

“[Sunway Sanctuary] caters for seniors to stay in a community where they can actively participate in various activities. This place is not a nursing home. It's meant for seniors who are active. So they could be retirees or semi-retirees but in this case, we have facilities and services that take care of all their daily needs," said Sunway Healthcare Group president Datuk Lau Beng Long in his opening speech at a media tour on Tuesday (June 20).

There are two types of lifestyle that the units in Sunway Sanctuary caters to which is independent living and assisted living.

Sunway Sanctuary health and wellness adviser Ericson Chia Kwan Min explained: “Independent living means somebody who is very independent and able to take care of themselves, probably 99% of the time. They are here to enjoy the facility and in the event of any health issue, Sunway Medical is just next door. [For] assisted living units (ALU), sometimes there's confusion between ALU and nursing care facilities. A nursing care facility basically entails a patient that requires 24/7 care and [they] could be of any age. For ALU, they (patients) are relatively independent and may [only] require some assistance.”

For ALU units, add-on facilities such as a fall detection system, multiple SOS bells placed in strategic places and a monitoring system will be included as well.

“A lot of people when they are old come to a facility like this. You are not here to let your days go by. We do not believe in that. We believe in [the] elderly using their time to learn new things, meet new people [to] form new relationships and be as active as possible and of course to maintain a very good emotional and mental status,” Chia added.

On facility offerings, 100,000 sq ft have been devoted to facilities at Level 15 and 16 with all types of facilities that promote an active lifestyle for the senior citizens.

These facilities are a heated infinity pool, gymnasium, sauna, massage room, salon, yoga deck, laundry room, shared workspace, event space, lounge, mini theatre, karaoke room, games room, library, billiard room and community rooms. Additionally, there is a lounge area on each floor.

Additionally, Lau added that a covered walkway will be built that extends from Sunway Sanctuary to the upcoming Performing Arts Centre, located next to Sunway Geo Avenue and the South Quay Lake.
