LAHAD DATU (Feb 20): Lahad Datu-based company Eco Fresh Cold Storage Sdn Bhd will invest RM5 million to develop a supermarket complete with cold storage facilities in Sabah’s state-owned POIC (Palm Oil Industrial Cluster) Lahad Datu industrial park.

In a statement today, POIC Sabah Sdn Bhd, the industrial park’s developer, said it had signed a sale and purchase agreement with Eco Fresh Cold Storage for the sale of 0.75 hectares of land in the industrial park to the latter.

It said Eco Fresh Cold Storage’s decision to invest at POIC Lahad Datu will generate wider awareness of the great business opportunities for small and medium enterprises to be based at the industrial park.

POIC Sabah said it anticipates growing SME interest and has set aside land to cater to the increasing demand.

“With the growing global interest in the resources in BIMP EAGA, from palm oil to petroleum to marine resources and minerals, we think the completion for strategic industrial land will intensify,” it said.

POIC Sabah group chief executive officer Datuk Fredian Gan hailed the retail cold storage store and fresh mart operator’s investment as an indication of confidence in POIC Lahad Datu and the economic fundamentals of Sabah’s east coast.

He said POIC Sabah has a vision for POIC Lahad Datu to be a logistics hub for the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, East Asean Growth Area (BIMP EAGA) and desired investors in hinterland transport and inter-BIMP maritime linkages.

“BIMP EAGA, with an 80 million population, can be a lucrative single market when its logistics infrastructure is in place,” he added.
