- The initiative is projected to result in long-term savings of approximately RM41.3 million in energy costs over 20 years and reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 98,640 tonnes—equivalent to removing thousands of vehicles from the road.
KUALA LUMPUR (May 7): Hektar Real Estate Investment Trust (Hektar REIT) (KL:HEKTAR) has inked a solar energy partnership with Samaiden Group Bhd (KL:SAMAIDEN), for Samaiden to install and operate solar photovoltaic (PV) systems across five of Hektar REIT’s shopping centres through a zero-capex model, requiring no upfront capital outlay from the REIT.
The initiative is projected to result in long-term savings of approximately RM41.3 million in energy costs over 20 years and reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 98,640 tonnes—equivalent to removing thousands of vehicles from the road.
“This partnership with Samaiden marks a pivotal step in our sustainability journey. It is a cornerstone of our energy management strategy, marking a significant leap towards clean energy adoption,” said Hektar Asset Management Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Zainal Iskandar Ismail.
“By integrating rooftop solar PV systems across our malls, we are not only reducing our carbon footprint, but also increasing energy efficiency and lowering total electricity consumption—potentially by up to 15% annually compared to the previous year. This is a strategic move that supports national climate commitments while delivering tangible returns to our unitholders, tenants, and communities.”
He added that Hektar REIT’s recent acquisition, Kolej Yayasan Saad Melaka, has already implemented an on-site solar project, with similar initiatives to be extended to future acquisitions.
Samaiden group managing director Datuk Chow Pui Hee said, “We are proud to collaborate with Hektar REIT on this milestone project, which aligns with our mission to accelerate Malaysia’s clean energy transition. Our zero-capex solar programme provides businesses with the opportunity to integrate sustainable energy solutions without financial barriers, allowing them to focus on operational savings and long-term sustainability gains.”
Hektar REIT is Malaysia’s first listed retail-focused REIT, with a portfolio comprising retail properties and a private education asset across four states. Samaiden, founded in 2013, is a renewable energy specialist providing engineering, procurement, commissioning and construction services for solar PV systems, along with environmental consulting and maintenance services.
