KLANG (May 20): The Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) has unveiled the highlights of its PKFZ 2.0 Masterplan, a roadmap aimed at transforming the free zone into a next-generation logistics and industrial ecosystem, integrating sustainability, technology and investor-oriented services to enhance Malaysia’s standing in regional trade and supply chains.

CEO Priscilla Lim said the masterplan is structured in three phases—short, medium and long term—and will involve both infrastructure improvements and the introduction of new value-added services to meet evolving industry needs.

Over the next two to three years, the immediate focus will be on upgrading infrastructure and boosting occupancy rates, particularly in light industrial units (LIUs), where current occupancy hovers at around 60%, said Lim.

“What we are looking at is improving our efficiency through digitalisation and advanced technology like AI to enhance security and safety,” she said at a press conference on Tuesday.

“We are also aligning ourselves with the national green agenda to create a greener port environment.”

Sustainability will be embedded, Lim said, with PKFZ’s buildings now solar-powered and the company gradually switching its internal fleet to electric vehicles.

The close proximity to Port Klang further supports the green agenda, as the shorter distance between warehouse facilities and the port contributes to lower carbon release and greater energy savings for tenants, especially for export-oriented businesses, Lim noted.

PKFZ also plans to broaden its services beyond traditional warehousing, eventually incorporating more specialised, high-value trade facilitation and investor support services.

According to Lim, while the short-term phase will concentrate on increasing occupancy and strengthening partnerships, the mid-term horizon of five years will focus on introducing these new services.

The long-term vision, looking ahead to a 10-year horizon, is to develop an integrated ecosystem that goes beyond current offerings.

Lim also revealed that PKFZ is preparing to launch the final two parcels of available land within the free zone, measuring 7.5 acres and 3.1 acres respectively.

"We've got over 600 acres of land already developed into warehouses. This has been leased for the long term. So we are working very closely with our lessees who are actually building up and developing this area to also help them fill up their space as well. So that works very well for us because they are our clients as well," she added.

PKFZ's 20th anniversary celebration will span the entire year, leading up to a grand finale in October 2025, which will include trade exhibitions and networking events.
