Residential rooftop solar quota under Net Energy Metering fully taken up

KUALA LUMPUR (May 21): The rooftop solar quota under the Net Energy Metering (NEM) mechanism for residences (NEM Rakyat) has been fully taken up, according to the latest data published by the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (Seda).

A total of 599 megawatts (MW) has been applied for the total 600MW quota allocated under the NEM Rakyat, with 579MW already approved, the data showed.

NEM Rakyat is one of three key categories under the NEM 3.0 programme, which was launched by the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra) to encourage solar rooftop installations across residential, commercial, government, and industrial sectors.

Meanwhile, NEM GoMEn, which supports solar adoption for government buildings, has seen an uptake of 82MW out of its 100MW allocation. A total of 67.72 MWac under this segment has received approval so far.

For the commercial and industrial sector under the Nova (net offset virtual aggregation), 1,165MW has been applied for out of the total 1,700MW allocated, with 1,112MW already approved.

It remains to be seen if the residential NEM quota will be extended, as the government has introduced other residential-related rooftop solar programmes such as the Community Renewable Energy Aggregation Mechanism (Cream), which includes a charge of 15 sen/kWh to use the distribution network infrastructure.

Other programmes include self-consumption (selco), which allows a homeowner to use solar energy for their electricity usage, but forgoes any excess electricity generated. Instead, NEM allows the excess electricity to offset future usage in other premises owned by the same homeowner within one year.
