KUALA LUMPUR (May 29): The commitment of China Communications Construction Company Ltd (CCCC) in completing the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project has strengthened strategic Malaysia-China cooperation in the development of high-impact infrastructure.

Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said the project is on a solid track for completion in December 2026, with full operations expected to begin on Jan 1, 2027.

“This afternoon, I received a courtesy call from Wang Tongzhou, chairman of CCCC, following the Asean Summit.

“We discussed the progress of the ECRL project, which had reached 82.45% as of April 2025. Also discussed in the meeting was the readiness of ECRL Operation Sdn Bhd for the operational and maintenance phase,” he said in a Facebook post on Wednesday (May 28).

The 665-kilometre ECRL project spans the east coast states of Kelantan, Terengganu, and Pahang, before connecting Selangor on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia.
