PETALING JAYA (Aug 13): Persatuan Insurans Am Malaysia (PIAM) has reminded Malaysians of the importance of fire insurance following a fire in Pantai Dalam, Kuala Lumpur that destroyed several homes and businesses on Aug 7.
The fire caused significant damage to predominantly wooden residences and commercial premises, with an estimated 90% and 80% destruction respectively. The Fire and Rescue Department worked to contain the blaze.
PIAM CEO Chua Kim Soon (pictured) expressed gratitude to the Fire and Rescue Department for its efforts in extinguishing the fire.
“While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, we urge Malaysians to be safe and prepared, as nearly 60% of home fires in the country are due to electrical malfunctions and short-circuiting,” Chua said in a statement.
PIAM recommended that those affected verify their fire insurance coverage, document damages thoroughly, and contact their insurers promptly to initiate claims. Necessary documents include police and fire department reports, proof of ownership, and repair estimates.
The association added that while insurance cannot replace sentimental losses, adequate coverage provides a crucial financial safety net to aid recovery and rebuilding.
PIAM also encouraged the public to regularly review their policies and consult insurance agents or companies to address potential gaps.
PIAM offers a Building Cost Calculator on its website to help homeowners estimate appropriate insurance sums based on rebuilding costs, excluding land value.
