KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 13): UEM Sunrise Bhd’s (KL:UEMS) collaborative company, Mega Legacy (M) Sdn Bhd, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to implement Phase 2 of the lake rehabilitation programme at Kepong Metropolitan Park, Kuala Lumpur.

The collaboration aims to restore water quality and ecological balance at one of Kuala Lumpur’s largest urban lakes through targeted treatment systems and a long-term maintenance strategy. The Phase 2 also includes upgrades to lakeside infrastructure to support kayaking, dragon boating, jogging, cycling and community recreation, according to a press statement on Thursday.

The project follows assessments by the University of Malaya in 2023 and Phase 1 in 2024, which analysed sediment, nutrient levels and biodiversity to inform technical solutions.

Yayasan UEM, the philanthropic arm of UEM Group Bhd, will provide a grant to co-finance the Phase 2 restoration works.

Kepong Metropolitan Park spans 219 acres and includes a 106-acre lake adjacent to UEM Sunrise’s Kiara Bay township and the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM).

The initiative supports DBKL’s environmental agenda to enhance urban green spaces and promote sustainable recreational areas across the city.

Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif said the initiative reflects DBKL’s commitment to building a sustainable and inclusive city through a public, private and people partnership.

“A great city is not only liveable but lovable. Through collaboration from different sectors, we are restoring a valuable public asset and shaping a shared space where identity, heritage and community pride can flourish,” she said in the statement.

Mega Legacy chairman and UEM Sunrise independent non-executive director Datuk Azmar Talib said the project aligns with UEM Sunrise’s long-term goal of responsible development.

“This lake has always been central to Kiara Bay’s masterplan. Our responsibility is to enhance it as a clean, safe and accessible public asset for everyone,” he said.

The programme is guided by UEM Sunrise’s sustainability framework, which focuses on the pillars of Planet, People, Communities and Governance.

In addition to physical works, the parties will explore long-term monitoring, public education and environmental partnerships.
