PENANG (Dec 12): Eastern & Oriental Bhd (E&O) opens the Gurney Bridge in Penang, creating a new link from Gurney Bay to Andaman Island and establishing the main access route into the island’s upcoming township.

The ceremony was officiated by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, together with E&O executive chairman Datuk Seri Tee Eng Ho.

Tee said the opening of the Andaman Gurney Bridge will serve as the main link to the island.

“Measuring 1.2km in total length from Gurney Roundabout to Andaman Island, this marks the second bridge linking Andaman Island, following the completion of the first Andaman Bridge in 2022 connecting Seri Tanjung Pinang to Andaman Island, which is 400m long,” he said in his speech at the opening of the Gurney Bridge today.

He added the bridge seamlessly connects the vibrant public realms of Gurney Bay to Andaman Island, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy car-lite travel, and waterfront leisure.

“This is an eight-lane bridge with four metres of pedestrian walkway on each side.

“When we first planned Andaman, our goal was to create a sustainable and world-class township with strong design, careful planning, and lasting value. This bridge will bring us one step closer to that vision,” he stated.

E&O managing director Kok Tuck Cheong explained that the opening of the Gurney Bridge strengthens connectivity to Andaman Island.

“It also supports the development of a well-connected community, cutting travel time between Andaman Island and Gurney Drive from 15 minutes to about five minutes,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chow stated the Gurney Bridge is a key step in improving connectivity between Gurney Drive and Andaman Island.

“This bridge is built to strengthen access to Andaman Island and ease traffic along the northern corridor.

“We know Penangites always worry about jams, and we are just as concerned. The state has spent a lot of time studying the traffic impact, and this link will serve as an important alternative route,” he added.

The Gurney Bridge also plays a key role in supporting E&O’s ongoing developments on Andaman Island. Projects such as The Meg and Arica serviced apartments, which achieved full sell-outs during their launches, have established a growing residential community, while The Lume offers resort-style condominium living with lush greenery and seafront views.

Landed offerings, including Senna semi-detached residences, and Fera terrace homes (both more than 90% sold) cater to families seeking space and proximity to parks, and the premium Maris (open for sale) tower provides wellness-oriented, seafront living.

Looking ahead, E&O’s upcoming Avea high-rise precinct will further enhance walkability, community interaction, and lifestyle amenities, reinforcing the island’s master-planned vision of a 15-minute city where homes, recreation, retail, and hospitality are seamlessly connected.
