Malaysia logs 78% home ownership in 2024, near-universal access to electricity and water—DOSM

KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 24): Malaysia’s home ownership is on the climb, with the figure seeing a moderate pick up last year compared to two years ago.

About 78% of households lived in their own homes in 2024, up from 76% in 2022, according to a statement from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) on Wednesday.

Another 19.7% were living in rented living quarters, while 2.4% called quarters home, it added.

Home ownership is highest among the top 20% of households (85.5%), followed by the middle 40% (75.9%) and the bottom 40% (76.3%).

On a state and federal territory basis, Putrajaya had the lowest home ownership at 27.1%, followed by Labuan (61.1%), Kuala Lumpur (61.4%) and Selangor (71.9%).

Perlis (85.8%), Melaka (85.6%), Kedah (85.3%) and Perak (85.2%) boasted the highest percentage of home ownership.

"These differences reflect demographic composition, housing market conditions and urban-rural characteristics across states," DOSM noted. 

On access to utilities, electricity supply reached 99.9% of households nationwide, while access to treated piped water supply stood at 97.2%, and waste collection services at 75.4%.

In terms of vehicle ownership, 92.3% of households owned a car, and 78.1% owned a motorcycle.

On appliances, 68.8% of households owned an air conditioner, while 72% had a water filter.

As for access to communication, 99.6% of households have an internet subscription, 98.4% owned a smartphone, 57.6% owned a laptop.
