E&O’s Gurney Bridge recognised as Malaysia’s widest box girder bridge

PETALING JAYA (May 12): Eastern & Oriental Bhd (E&O) has been recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) for building the widest box girder bridge in Malaysia through the Gurney Bridge at Andaman Island in Penang. 

The recognition was presented by MBOR CEO Christopher Wong to E&O managing director Kok Tuck Cheong during The Meg appreciation evening last Thursday.

The event was witnessed by Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow and E&O executive chairman Tee Eng Ho.

Chow said Andaman Island is envisioned as a next-generation township that enhances the way people live, work, and connect. 

“I am pleased to note that the Gurney Bridge will be receiving the Widest Box Girder Bridge in Malaysia by the Malaysia Books of Records, reflecting the scale and engineering excellence behind this project,” he said in a statement yesterday.

E&O managing director Kok Tuck Cheong explained this recognition by The Malaysia Book of Records is a meaningful milestone for them. 

“Gurney Bridge is more than just a connection point, it is a key enabler of Andaman Island’s vision as a fully integrated, future-ready township.

“The bridge not only enhances accessibility and connectivity, but also plays an important role in shaping a vibrant waterfront environment that supports community, mobility, and long-term growth," he added.

Spanning 450m in length and 40m in width, the Gurney Bridge features eight vehicular lanes and four-metre-wide pedestrian walkways on both sides.

Strategically linking Andaman Island to Gurney Drive, the bridge is expected to improve traffic flow, reduce travel time and provide an alternative access route along Penang’s northern seafront.

E&O said the bridge also serves as a waterfront landmark with views of the sea and skyline, supporting a more walkable and connected urban environment as part of its 30-year masterplan for Andaman Island.

The company added that the bridge’s integration into the wider road network would support smoother traffic circulation to surrounding areas, including Tanjung Tokong and the greater Gurney precinct.
