GEORGE TOWN (May 14): Penang has achieved 100% 4G coverage in populated areas as of last April, although efforts are ongoing to address connectivity gaps in several locations, particularly along coverage boundaries, said Zairil Khir Johari. (pictured)

The State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman said the figure was based on network planning projections, but acknowledged that some areas were still experiencing weak connectivity.

“The matter is being addressed and the state government will work closely with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to resolve the issue.

“Focus is also being given to recreational and tourism areas that require better connectivity, including rural locations that continue to face internet access problems,” he said during the winding-up session of the Penang state legislative assembly sitting here on Thursday.

On 5G services, Zairil said coverage in populated areas across the state had reached 91.9% as of last April and was expected to improve further in line with the ongoing rollout by U Mobile.

He said the state government, through the Local Government Division (BKT) under the Penang State Secretary’s Office, together with Digital Nasional Bhd and U Mobile, would continue strengthening the implementation of 5G to ensure smooth and orderly deployment.

Zairil also said Penang had recorded an average mobile broadband speed of 211.9Mbps, surpassing the national target of 100Mbps.

Apart from expanding outdoor 5G coverage, he said the state government was also focusing on in-building coverage (IBC), with key government buildings and premises prioritised for further improvements.
